This is an immature black-crowned night heron. Typically it's a secretive species that you will see in the undergrowth near a pond or river. This guy was perched in a tree about ten feet off the ground watching the passers-by near a bustling road. I found him near the Crowley farm, museum, and nature center. Crowley Farm is an old farm converted to a learning center for among other things, sustainable agriculture, near Sarasota Florida. Other images here show the surrounding active wildlife area and the mature version of the black-crowned night heron and its cousin, the yellow-crowned night heron
Check out this cute little fellow
